Without wars,
all of you will now live
happily ever after
Peace, Aristophanes, 421BC

Lenia Sofokleus

Nazim My Brother

Yet I believe, Nazim my brother, if I burn or you burn
even all poets together - if we all burn this world will still remain

Im not saying for ever but a very long time an alcoholic with liver cirrhosis
who knows no more, will he be saved?

Therefore my brother Nazim
- you dreamer, great poet - lets find another way
to push the world towards a new beginning.

Without fires, without bodies burnt to death.
With human beings happy to live who simply share the earth.

Lenia Sophocleous

The inspiration for the poem My brother Nazim came from the work of one of my favorite poets, the well-known Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet (1902-1963). His poem”Like Kerem”(1930) was among those that had a great influence on me as a teenager. In those days revolution and extreme self-sacrifice seemed the best way to have a better life:

If I dont burn
if you dont burn if we dont burnHow will the light conquer the darkness?” *

As I have matured and the world we live in has changed, l now believe the best way to a better life is Peace.

Lenia Sophocleous

* Verse from the poem “Like Kerem of Nazim Hikmet.
